Science and Ethics Emphasized by CIU

Assist. Prof. Dr. Begüm Berkmen, a faculty member of the Faculty of Dentistry at Cyprus International University (CIU), stated, on the occasion of Dentists’ Day celebrated every year on November 22 and the Community Oral and Dental Health Week observed between November 22–27, that “This special day and week are not only a commemoration for us dentists but also an opportunity to remember the value our profession adds to society.”

Emphasizing that “Oral and dental health is an integral part of overall health,” Berkmen added, “Current scientific data show that periodontal diseases are directly related to cardiovascular conditions, diabetes, and respiratory system diseases. Therefore, dentistry is not only a field of aesthetic or localized treatment but one of the fundamental components of a holistic health approach.” Highlighting that advancements in science and technology are moving dentistry forward every day, Berkmen said, “Digital dentistry, AI-supported diagnostic methods, biomaterial research, and 3D printing technologies enable us to offer safer, more comfortable, and personalized treatments to our patients.” She continued, “We believe that behind every healthy smile lies knowledge, effort, and dedication. Practicing our profession in line with ethical values and guided by science contributes to the improvement of both individual and public health.”

Berkmen concluded, “On this occasion, I congratulate all dentists who practice their profession guided by science and in adherence to ethical values during Dentists’ Week, and I thank them for their valuable contributions to the oral and dental health of society.”
