Intellectual Property and Patent Processes Discussed at CIU

At a seminar organized by the Faculty of Engineering at Cyprus International University, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Kondoz, an internationally experienced expert in his field, provided comprehensive insights into patent processes, intellectual property rights, and the legal aspects of artificial intelligence based technologies.

During the event, the transformation of technological innovations into economic value and the legal and technical challenges encountered in this process were discussed. Prof. Dr. Kondoz emphasized that patents are not merely tools for technical protection but also carry strategic value, noting that when managed properly, they can yield significant economic returns.

In his speech, Kondoz shared examples from international patent cases in which he personally participated as an expert. He pointed out that application, translation, maintenance, and potential litigation costs in patent processes can be substantial expenses. However, he also stated that with proper planning, these processes can turn into highly profitable outcomes. Stressing that obtaining a patent alone is not sufficient, Kondoz highlighted the importance of legally protecting patents, adding that this requires expertise and significant resources. Drawing from his own academic experience, he noted that a study that was not patented in time later became an international standard, resulting in a major missed opportunity.

Prof. Dr. Kondoz also remarked that a clear global framework regarding the intellectual property of inventions developed through artificial intelligence has not yet been established. He explained that this is largely because intellectual property rights are generally attributed to real persons. He further identified issues such as data insufficiency/security, system bias, and explainability as key challenges in the field of artificial intelligence.
At the end of the seminar, the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Prof. Dr. Mehmet Kuşaf, presented a certificate of appreciation to Prof. Dr. Ahmet Kondoz. The event concluded with a group photo session.
