Safe Internet Is Not Solely an Individual Responsibility

As part of Safer Internet Day on February 10, Assist. Prof. Dr. Kian Jazayeri, Head of the Management Information Systems Department at Cyprus International University (CIU), shared his views, drawing attention to the importance of using digital environments in a safe, informed, and responsible manner. Jazayeri noted that the widespread use of the internet in many areas—from education and academic research to communication and social life—has made digital security an even more critical issue.

In his statement, Assist. Prof. Dr. Kian Jazayeri emphasized:
“Safe internet use should not be regarded solely as an individual responsibility; it should also be addressed as an institutional and societal issue. Ensuring security in digital environments is only possible through the development of conscious user profiles.”

Jazayeri pointed out that the protection of personal data, cyberbullying, online fraud, and misleading content are among the major risks prevalent in today’s digital environments. He stated that raising individuals’ awareness of these risks contributes to the development of a culture of safe internet use in digital spaces.
Highlighting that digital security is not limited to technical measures alone, Jazayeri stressed that safe internet use should be approached on the basis of awareness, consciousness, and ethical responsibility. He added that this approach contributes to the creation of a secure and sustainable digital academic environment at universities, and underscored that strengthening digital literacy is one of the fundamental elements of this process.
