Saffet Kaya Bekiroğlu of Zaha Hadid Architects To Speak at CIU
Cyprus International University will host Saffet Kaya Bekiroğlu of the globally renowned Zaha Hadid Architect company. Bekiroğlu, a Turkish Cypriot architect, is one of the names behind the celebrated Haydar Aliyev Center in Baku, Azerbaijan.
The title of his talk will be “Innovation in Projects of Architecture and Design”, and the event will take place in the CIU Çevik Uraz Conference Hall on 11 May at 16.00. It will be free of charge and open to the public.
Bekiroğlu concluded his elementary and high-school education in Cyprus before graduating from Istanbul Technical University Faculty of Architecture. Undertaking his graduate studies at the University of California, in Los Angeles, Bekiroğlu worked with the renowned American architect Frank Gehry for five years before joining Zaha Hadid Architects in London, where he has been working since 2004.
Bekiroğlu has worked on the London Aquatics Centre for 2012 London Olympics, as well as projects such as the Istanbul Kartal Pendik Master Plan, and the Elefteria Square of Nicosia, Cyprus which were accorded first-place prize in competitions. In addition to being an architect, Bekiroğlu also designs stages and products, and regularly teaches at several international faculties of architecture.
The Haydar Aliyev Center, on which Bekiroğlu was Project Architect, was named ‘Best Design of the Year’ by the London Museum of Architecture.
